"Alma Pausing" drawing detail, lorraine garcía-nakata, 2015
"My work tends to be large in scale. I begin with a general idea or direction then trust my internal compass to switch on as my hand makes contact with my medium of choice. When I work, it keeps me agile and true to who I am….becoming. It’s not easy, but worth it."– Lorraine García-Nakata

My work is linked to moments that surface in daily life and how the can reveal the human condition––both external and internal terrain. My life experiences inform my work and my work informs my life in return. A finished piece often shares something I need to know.
For a woman, particularly a woman of color, it’s a political act to commit a lifetime to the creative process. My community work, parenting, and other areas of human endeavor are stronger and more aware as a result.
– Lorraine García-Nakata, 2013
Water moving over rocks and land, is what it feels like when I work. As I experience the terrain, it shapes and energizes me.
The finished piece tells me something I need to know about the human condition, the past, present, or what is possible. Community, spirit realm, daily living, and cultural wisdom inform the water.
